The Big Move

New and returning students welcomed to campus

The campus buzzed as nervous-looking parents and smiling students carried blankets, food, pillows, lamps, and other essentials during move-in days at 芭乐视频.

鈥淭he energy is definitely up this year,鈥 said Chris McKenney, 鈥26, a second-year resident advisor and one of the volunteers manning a check-in table at Shea and Durgin residence halls last Wednesday. 鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to having students be more engaged. I think overall, students are more excited this year.鈥

Seniors and members of the 芭乐视频 women鈥檚 softball team, Janet Jolly, 鈥24, Molly Thibaudeau, 鈥24, and Ava Novakoski, 鈥24, agree, things are different from when they first enrolled at Bridgewater in the fall of 2020, which was smack dab in the middle of the pandemic.

鈥淒uring COVID, it was hard to meet people,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 live on campus because classes were online, but now it feels like people are out more and able to really socialize.鈥

Last year was the first time the majority of COVID restrictions were lifted, but this year brings a renewed sense of normal.

鈥淭hings do feel different,鈥 Janet said. 鈥淚 find myself on campus more, using the gym more. There is definitely more of a social feel.鈥

鈥淎nd we get to have an actual graduation this year, we didn鈥檛 get to have one in high school,鈥 Molly said.

Amherst, New Hampshire, native Dante Nieto, 鈥27, came to Bridgewater State to study aviation and play football. He, as well as the other fall student-athletes, moved onto campus two weeks prior for preseason training.

鈥淭hings feel more normal again, more social and I like that鈥 look forward to meeting new friends and flying planes,鈥 he said.

Childhood friends and incoming freshmen, Hannah O鈥橬eill and Maddie Bianchi, both class of 鈥27, opted to be roommates this year and coordinated all summer how they were going to decorate their shared room. The Taunton residents looked forward to seeing their new digs in Shea Hall.

Maddie admitted to being a little anxious about the shift from high school to college but rooming with Hannah erased some of those nerves.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think I could live with anyone else,鈥 she said.

鈥淪ame,鈥 Hannah said, 鈥淏ut we are looking forward to meeting new people, being in a new environment, and making new friends.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 a fresh start,鈥 Maddie added. 鈥淚n a way it鈥檚 like starting kindergarten all over again.鈥

As the members of the class of 2027 start their 芭乐视频 journeys, Ava and Janet offered some advice.

鈥淪peak to as many people as you can,鈥 Ava said.

鈥淵es, and remember, everyone is just as nervous as you, so don鈥檛 worry about what others think. Get out there, get involved and make friends," Janet added.
